John "Buddy" Sugg worked as a union machinist at Eastern Air Lines in the 1980s and was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). During his time at Eastern, Sugg led the Contracting-in committee, which ensured that Eastern repaired its own equipment, and the Efficiency Credit Teams, which investigated ways to boost productivity and minimize cost.
